Lore & Background
His father was fatally shot over a pay dispute when Giannini was young. By 1916, he had expanded to several branches. Giannini invested in Bank of America, Los Angeles, founded in 1923 by Orra E. Monnette, and by 1929 the combined bank had over 400 offices in California.
Reader's Guide
Giannini's significance lies in democratizing banking by serving middle-class and immigrant customers, a radical departure from the era's focus on the wealthy. His use of branch banking stabilized banks during economic downturns and expanded capital bases. His holding company structure, Transamerica, influenced corporate organization, though later separated from banking by the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956.
